‘CareerXPlorer: Introduction to SEN: Understanding SEN and its Misconceptions’ Workshop

05/05/2025

On 5th May, 7 students who want to become teachers participated in a programme called ‘CareerXplorer: Introduction to SEN: Understanding SEN and its Misconceptions’ at Chinese University of Hong Kong organized by JYC Girls Impact Foundation. This opportunity deepened their understanding on students with special needs and the difficulties they are encountering. They learnt about different types of special education needs, for example, AD/HD, Dyslexia, ASD, mental illness, etc.

‘What shocks me the most is that the proportion of students with SEN among all students in Hong Kong is as high as 10%, so there is a need for the public, including us, to know more about them, so that we can offer appropriate help to them on a timely basis. We discussed some methods to help students with SEN, for instance, providing sufficient recess time and making colourful PowerPoints. Empathy is the key to open the hearts of the kids,’ shared by one of the attendees from our school.

It is hoped that this event can raise public awareness towards students with SEN and students may have more tolerance and empathy to them, creating a better school life together.
